ABAI Welcomes New Directors

Mariana Castells, MD, PhD, is a physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, Massachusetts. Her most recent honors include the James S. Winshall, MD Leadership Award, from the BWH Physician Recognition Awards; and the AAAAI Busse Family Lectureship Award, from the AAAAI.
Dr. Castells completed her BS at Lycée Francais and received her Medical Degree from Universidad Autonoma, both in Barcelona, Spain. She then attended Universidad Complutense, in Madrid Spain for her PhD in Immunology. Dr. Castells currently serves as the Director for both the Drug Hypersensitivity and Desensitization Center at BWH and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Mastocytosis Center at BWH and is a Full Professor at Harvard Medical School. She has served for 20 years as the BWH Training Program Director for Allergy.
Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, where she is Co-Director for Johns Hopkins Pediatric Research Unit. She has an active pediatric allergy clinic and is a principal investigator funded by the NIH on studies of the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of food allergy and other allergic diseases. She received her BA, MS and MD degrees from the University of California; the first two at Berkeley, and the latter at San Francisco. She also attended John Hopkins University, for her PhD and post-doctoral work.
Some of Dr. Keet’s recent honors include receiving the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2017. She also received the Outstanding Abstract Award, from the Junior Faculty of the AAP Section on Allergy and Immunology. She belongs to a number of other organizations by serving as an Editorial Board Member to the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and JACI: In Practice.
Aidan Long, MD, is a physician in the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. He has served as Division Director for 17 years and 12 years as Program Director, for the MGH Allergy and Immunology Fellowship. He also serves as chair of the MGH Department of Medicine Clinical Council.
He obtained his BS and MD degrees from University College Cork, National University of Ireland. He completed his Residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Dublin, Ireland and his Fellowship at McMaster University Medical Center in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Long serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, as well as the Association of Subspecialty Professors.
Wanda Phipatanakul, MD, serves as a Professor of Pediatrics, at Harvard Medical School, and as Senior Physician and Director, for the Asthma Clinical Research Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. She began her pre-medical studies at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she received her BS degree. Phipatanakul progressed in her medical career by attending Loma Linda University, obtaining her MD, followed by a pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins University. During her early years on faculty at Harvard Medical School, she obtained an MS degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
She is a recognized international leader investigating the role of modifiable environmental risk factors and health disparities in inner-city children with asthma and developing effective strategies to reduce and prevent asthma and allergic diseases. She is also an active member of the AAAAI and chairs the Environmental Occupational Respiratory Diseases Interest Section, the Environmental arm of the Office of School-based Management of Asthma, and the Interest Section Coordinating Committee. She currently is the president of the New England Society of Allergy.
Sarbjit Saini, MD, is Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, and Program Director of the Allergy Immunology Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Saini is section editor for UpToDate and former associate editor for the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, as well as being an ad hoc reviewer for many others, including the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
As an author, Dr Saini has 69 articles, reviews, and case reports to his credit, as well as book chapters, editorials, and guideline publications. He is involved in research as a principal investigator, and has given numerous lectures nationally. His research focuses on IgE receptor activation of human basophils and mast cells, especially the mechanisms underlying chronic urticaria. He is a member of many professional organizations, and he is the past chair of Food allergy, Anaphylaxis, Dermatology, and Drug Allergy (FADDA) Interest Section, of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Dr. Saini has received numerous awards and honors, most recently, being elected to Collegium Internationale Allergologicum Membership in 2016.
