ABAI Director Appreciation Post

On behalf of the ABAI Board of Directors and Staff, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation and congratulations on a job well done to Dr.’s Ted Freeman and Kathleen May, completing their term as Director on December 31, 2020. It is hard to put in words how much these two extraordinary leaders have accomplished in a multitude of roles during their six-year term summarized below.
Their selfless dedication, leadership and out of the box thinking is best characterized by always keeping diplomates at the center of every decision. They both leveraged their private practice experience in constantly ensuring that programs and assessments were clinically focused and meaningful. Accordingly, both were elected by peers and served admirably as Chair of the ABAI Board of Directors during their tenure.
Dr. Freeman and Dr. May also distinguished themselves as the first CAP Committee Co-Chairs. They helped develop, launch and shape this successful longitudinal core knowledge and article-based program, revolutionizing continuing certification for the specialty of Allergy and Immunology.
In addition to their ABAI roles, both extended their influence and perspective on a national scale. Dr. Freeman was also aptly entrusted to serve as ABAI’s first ever Member Board Empowered Representative on the American Board of Medical Specialties Board of Directors in its newly launched governance model. Dr. May was also selected to serve on the ACGME Review Committee for Allergy and Immunology accrediting fellowship programs nationwide.
We heartily thank Dr. Freeman and Dr. May for their leadership and innumerable contributions to ABAI, diplomates, patients and the specialty throughout their service on the Board.
