MOC Part II: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment
The following components must be completed to satisfy Part II of the MOC process.
CME Credits
Diplomates must attest to obtaining 25 hours of Allergy/Immunology CME credits from accredited organizations every year in order to fulfill the lifelong learning and self-assessment component of MOC. Copies of CME certificates are not required, however, diplomates are required to log onto their diplomate web portal and attest to completing the 25 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits in allergy and immunology. It is suggested that of the 25 credits, six be in a Self-Assessment activity. Recognizing state licensing and institutional requirements and in the desire to reduce redundancy in demands upon our diplomates, ABAI will accept up to six CME credits for non-self-directed state and institutional mandated CME activities (i.e. pain management, elder abuse, substance abuse).
The ABAI will audit 10% of diplomates participating in the MOC program for CME. Diplomates will only be chosen for an audit one time during the 10-year MOC cycle. If selected for an audit, diplomates will be required to submit CME certificates for the previous year.
Please note that only
AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM
in allergy/immunology will be accepted.
Patient Safety Modules
Designed to assess and enhance patient safety in the practice setting, all diplomates must complete an ABAI-approved Patient Safety Module once every 10 years.
Diplomates will complete one of the following activity options in order to satisfy the Patient Safety requirement:
- IHI Patient Safety Curriculum
The IHI Open School’s updated Patient Safety Curriculum is packed with new multimedia and the latest thinking in the field. The PS 101: Introduction to Patient Safety course consists of 3 lessons and a post course survey. In this course, you’ll learn why becoming a student of patient safety is critical for everyone involved in health care today and you will learn a framework for building safer, more reliable systems of care.
IHI Open School online courses are free for individual students, residents, and faculty, as well as members of the Least Developed Countries as categorized by the United Nations. The estimated time to complete this course is 1 hour 15 minutes.
* PLEASE NOTE: Upon completion, you must forward a copy of the course completion certificate to the ABAI (abai@abai.org) in order to receive MOC Part II – Patient Safety credit.
To access the course you must create an account, after creating your account enter “PS 101: Introduction to Patient Safety” in the search field. To begin the process click here.
- Patient Safety Foundations for ABAI Module (This course will be retired September 10, 2024.)
The Patient Safety Foundations for ABAI module is a quality improvement tool designed to enhance patient safety in the practice setting, with special emphasis on allergen immunotherapy. The web-based learning module focuses on specific ways to improve safety in a clinical environment by carefully examining particular aspects of a physician's practice and implementing improvements based on best practices and published practice parameters.

ABAI will grant patient safety credit to individuals who have completed a patient safety course/program within their current MOC cycle. To receive patient safety credit, you must submit a copy of the course/program description and one of the following:
The course/program description must state "patient safety" as a focus.
The Acknowledgement and Attestation for Patient Safety Credit form, course/program completion certificate and/or CME certificate must have the date of completion and/or dates of participation. Completion must fall within your current 10 year MOC cycle.
**Please note: To ensure review/approval by the end of the year, paperwork must be received at the ABAI office by October 1st . Request received after October 1st may not be processed by year end.
All required documentation should be emailed to abai@abai.org.
